An Update to a Classic: Old-fashioned Chocolate Chocolate Chip Pound Cake

My love for the classic, old-fashioned Southern pound cake is no secret.

I find it to be the most perfect of all housewarming gifts, convalescence delivery, afternoon snack with a hot coffee or cup of tea, and of course- the ultimate birthday cake year after year for Nana’s big day.

So, to celebrate a special occasion, I naturally always think of bringing a beautiful pound cake for sharing, but sometimes even the greatest classic needs a bit of updating. This was a recipe shared by my old roommate Katie and is a very special double chocolate version of a classic pound cake! I believe she had told me it was a cake in an old church cookbook from her hometown in Greenville, SC.

Wait til you sink your teeth into this! So moist, rich, and perfectly transportable. It’s a recipe you will turn to again and again.

Chocolate Chocolate Chip Sour Cream Pound Cake 


  • 1 box yellow cake mix {I used Duncan Hines’ Butter Golden Recipe}
  • 1 box Instant Chocolate Jello pudding
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 8 oz carton of sour cream
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • powdered sugar for decoration, optional


Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.

Using a handheld or electric stand mixer, mix together the cake mix, pudding mix, oil, and water until just combined and all the dry ingredients are moistened. Then, one at a time, beat in the eggs.


It’s a gorgeous batter.

Then mix in the sour cream.


I love the way the creamy white ribbons into the chocolate batter. It’s the simple things really.

And finally, fold in the chocolate chips by hand. Even more chocolate— why ever not? But, be careful not to overmix!CAKE 3

Pour into a generously greased bundt pan and smooth out the top. Bake for approximately 55 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean. Allow to cool slightly and then invert the cake and allow to cool completely on a wire rack.
 Just beautiful & perfectly inviting!



Perhaps this becomes my new classic? Who can tell?
