“The Lord, your God, will fight for you; You need only be still.” — Exodus 14:14
Everytime I read that verse or see that scripture propped on the top of my TV cabinet, I think to myself… “Do I live a life that reflects that?”
“Do I live a life that shows that to others?” … “Is that my testimony?”
And the honest to goodness truth is, no. I don’t live in light of that truth each day.
I am often struck by the words, “you need only”, such simple words with such profound meaning. For someone like me that is always going, doing, thinking, writing, reading, striving, helping, building, etc. It is just one simple ask of our Savior. You need only… be still.
“That’s all?”… my inquisitive heart asks.
The world expects much more from me. Be smarter, be prettier, be thinner, be funnier, be more intelligent, be more hospitable, do more, work harder, spend more, stretch yourself thinner and thinner until…
The world is full of conditional “ifs”. If you do this, you will garner love. If you do this, you will receive success, praise, accolades, power, fame. And because of all of that, then and only then, will you feel worthy.
But, that is not His message.
I recently read an excerpt from a book by Pastor Tullian Tchividjian, grandson of Billy Graham, entitled Jesus + Nothing = Everything.
How I longed to hear a message like that!
In it, he writes: “Rediscovering the gospel enabled me to see that-
because Jesus was strong for me, I was free to be weak;
because Jesus won for me, I was free to lose;
because Jesus was someone, I was free to be no one;
because Jesus was so extraordinary, I was free to be ordinary;
because Jesus already succeeded for me, I was free to fail.”
Bottom Line. Really.
In Christ, you are already in! The Lord loves you! You are hopelessly and unconditionally loved. No conditional ifs, ands, or buts. God is boldly broadcasting His love for you across the world and across the heavens. Don’t miss the good gifts He gives. Ask Him to open your spiritual eyes so that you may see the wonder.
Timothy Keller once said, “If we are deeply moved by the sight of His love for us, it detaches our hearts from other would-be saviors. We stop trying to redeem ourselves through our pursuits and relationships, because we are already redeemed.”
Take the Exodus 14:14 dare. Be still & be enveloped.
Live in light of His truth for you today.
