I felt so small.

The California Coastal Redwoods.

More astounding that I ever imagined, and more awe-inspiring than any of us were prepared for.

I knew it would be one of our highlights of the trip’s reel, but it was honestly, probably my biggest highlight and an image that will stay with me always.

I have never felt so small or so insignificant in my entire life.

We serve a great, big, creative Creator that has demonstrated his great creativity and intelligence all around us, if we will just stop and look around. Reminders of His great power and love for us are all around us.

You can’t even believe how quiet these forests are. And I feel the pictures somehow capture that quiet, that solace, that reflective nature that you have amongst these giants.

No car horns. No trains or sirens. No dogs barking or even birds chirping. Just total and complete silence.

It was wonderful. Total tranquility.

For all of their weight and impossible heights, the Coastal Redwoods’ roots are relatively shallow- only drilling down about 8 feet or so into the ground, as shown above.

And when they tumble, and they do often fall, they become a part of the forest floor, untouched, giving the forest floor more nutrients and oxygen that it needs, and they are absolutely magnificent! Like walls built up around you.

And when you stand at the trunk of one and look up?

Nothing short of amazement.

Yeah, I have a lot of these types of pictures… Looking so far up and taking pictures so often kind of threw off my equilibrium for a minute. You are just dwarfed by these monsters.

And I love the canopies, and how the light trickles in. It’s just a bit of sunlight that reaches all the way to the forest floor. The canopy and foliage up top is so thick and so dense, it almost seemed like nighttime walking through, and it was just after lunch!

And we walked those trails and that forest floor for what felt like hours, but passed in a matter of moments.

“Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. And He will delight in the fear of the LORD, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make a decision by what His ears hear;
But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked. Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist.” – Isaiah 11:1-5
